One of the most beloved drivers in the world, Nico Hulkenberg is back in F1 2021 season. The 33-year-old has joined Aston Martin as the official reserve and development driver. While it was expected considering the performances of German as super-sub last season, the Silverstone-based team confirmed the appointment on Thursday.

I am fully prepared to take on the challenge: Nico

The 33-year-old is one of the most experienced drivers in F1 circuit, with 176 race starts to his name. As Aston Martin appointed Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll as their drivers for the 2021 season, there was still a seat left for a reserve driver, especially considering the ongoing pandemic. Hence, it was about time for Hulkenberg to return to Formula One once again.

Reflecting on his new role for Aston Martin, Hulkenberg said, “First of all, it’s great to get this deal signed up with plenty of notice – last year, I didn’t have quite as much time to prepare before jumping in the car! I’m really pleased to once again work with this team – with whom I have driven many times during my career. Obviously, I’m hoping that Sebastian and Lance enjoy uninterrupted seasons this year, but the team knows it can rely on me to step in and do an excellent job, and I’m fully prepared to take on that challenge. It will also be interesting to help develop the team through the season, and I’m really looking forward to pulling great lap-times out of my arm sleeve.”

Hulkenback - The best super sub

The German driver has an amazing past while working as a reserve driver. Last year, Nico was called upon at the eleventh hour by Racing Point for the Eifel GP when Stroll was suffering from illness. The 33-year-old finished 20th in qualifying but put up a great show in the race the next day to finish P8. Hulkenberg was awarded 'driver of the day' for his heroic show at the Nürburgring.

Earlier that season, Nico had also put up a fantastic show at 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone circuit. The German had qualified P3 before ending the race at P7, producing an absolute driving masterclass with so little preparations. With him entering the car and getting some quality time to get adjusted, the fans can surely expect another scintillating show from the experienced driver whenever he gets an opportunity.
