Australia sealed the semifinal berth after a three-wicket win over Afghanistan on Tuesday, November 7 at the Wankhede Stadium. While the credit of Aussies win goes to the all-rounder, Glenn Maxwell, who played an unbeaten 201-run knock to help the side cross the line which eventually seemed to have looked to far.

However, the 35-year-old held the fortress from one end in this chase, registering the third highest individual scores in World Cups and the highest individual score in men’s ODI run chase. While his knock was hailed by many greats of the game including Ian Smith, who was part of the commentary box at that moment, his RCB teammate, Virat Kohli hailed this one of the greatest knocks of ODI inning.

Talking about the match, the Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side posted 291/5 in their 50 over inning, courtesy a centurion knock from Ibrahim Zadran and a crucial cameo from Rashid Khan down the order. However, the Afghan bowlers continued their momentum in game as they reduced the Aussies to 52/4 after 10 overs and thereafter depleted the side to 126/7 after 25 over. But a slow knock, which was converted into a double ton helped the Pat Cummins-led side seal the semifinals spot.

The five-time world champions Australia will now play Bangladesh at the MCA Stadium in Pune before taking on South Africa in the second semifinal at Eden Gardens in Kolkata of the ODI World Cup 2023.
