In a major development from Indian cricket, a report has claimed that Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will not consider sacking the current head coach of the Indian cricket team Gautam Gambhir even if his team gets clean-sweeped 5-0 by England in Test series. Currently, India are trailing 1-0 in the Test series, and after the defeat in first Test at Headingley in Leeds, the team combinations and strategies adopted by the head coach Gautam Gambhir and his support staff are coming into question by many experts and former players.
But, the BCCI seems to be trusting him. According to a report by InsideSport, an official from BCCI said, “At the moment, Gambhir is doing a good job with a young team. In transition, you do not always get the intended results. Australia and England both struggled during their transitions. So, it’s premature to take a call on Gambhir. We still have four test matches in England, and we are hopeful that we can turn things around. Beyond that, we will see. He has full trust of the board.”
Test turmoils for India during Gautam Gambhir’s coaching tenure
Indian cricket team's red-ball performance is quite abysmal ever since Gautam Gambhir’s coaching stint began with them. So far during his tenure, India has just won three Test matches, including two at home against Bangladesh and one against Australia away. Barring that India failed to reach the WTC final 2025 despite the previous coach Rahul Dravid leaving India in a good position to earn their spot.
Amidst these tumultuous times, Gautam Gambhir is nearing his one-year work anniversary as the head coach. It was on June 29 last year when Rahul Dravid signed off after coaching the team to the T20 World Cup title. Gambhir was considered as an ideal candidate for that spot as VVS Laxman said no to the job and BCCI reportedly turned down Ricky Ponting’s candidature. As a result, Gambhir was selected on July 9 in what many claim as a new chapter for Indian cricket.
