Defending champions Manchester United crashed out of the FA Cup in the fifth round after suffering a defeat at the hands of Fulham at the Old Trafford on penalties. After the contest was level at 1-1 at the end of extra-time, Bernd Leno saved a couple of penalties, to ensure Fulham reach the quarter-finals with a 4-3 scoreline in the shootout, and in his post-match comments, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim reiterated that their biggest goal is still to win the Premier League.
Notably, in a pulsating FA Cup fifth round tie, Fulham took the lead in the added time of the first half through a brilliantly headed goal from Calvin Bassey. During the second half, Manchester United equalised through a scintillating goal from their captain Bruno Fernandes in the 71st minute before both the teams had enough chances to win the match until the end of extra-time, but none of them took it.
The goal is to win the Premier League again: Ruben Amorim reiterates
Andre Onana wasn’t able to save any of the four penalties from Fulham players, but when Bernd Leno had saved one from Victor Lindelof, all the pressure was on Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee to keep them in the tie, but it wasn’t to be. In the post-match, Ruben Amorim, the manager of Manchester United, who was seemingly a bit dejected, spoke about the ultimate goal of the club during his managerial tenure.
He was quoted as saying, as per News18, “The goal is to win the Premier League, so I know that we are losing games and losing trophies during this season but the goal is to win the Premier League again.” The Portuguese also spoke about not knowing how long it will take Manchester United under him to clinch the biggest prize in English professional club football, but he vowed to continue looking forward irrespective of anything.
“But you start understanding. I think the players are better, we understand better the league, we know what to do with the squad, what is the future and we’ll see in the future,” he added.
