Wyndham Clark, the American professional golfer, won his first major championship in the sport on June 18, Sunday, at the U.S. Open. The 29-year-old held off the four-time major championship winner in a thrilling display of golf during the final day of the tournament at the Los Angeles Country Club.
Coming into the day 4 of the U.S. Open, Wyndham Clark was tied in first place with Rickie Fowler of USA at (-10), ahead of Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland at (-9). During the early stages of play, Fowler fell away from the leading pack as both Clark and McIlroy emerged as two strong contenders to win the U.S. Open.
It looked like the Northern Irishman was going to pull off a sensational victory, to get his hands on the first major championship of golf in nine years. But Wyndham Clark stayed resolute under extreme pressure to card an even-par 70 to stay marginally ahead of Rory McIlroy to win the U.S. Open. The overall score for the American was 10-under-par total of 270, while the Northern Irishman finished with 9-under-par total of 270.
Shortly after winning the first major championship of golf, the 29-year-old player received tons of messages and well wishes on social media from all comers. It included a heartfelt tweet from Paige Spiranac, the mega social media influencer and former golfer, who talked about how she and Wyndham Clark played golf together while growing up in Colorado.
It read, “Wyndham Clark and I grew up playing junior golf together in Colorado. Everyone would always say he had something special and we all knew he’d make it. Now he’s a major winner! Very cool moment”.
The U.S. Open victory for Wyndham Clark comes just a month after he won his first tournament on the PGA Tour, at North Carolina, in the Wells Fargo Championship.
