On Friday, May 2, Gujarat Titans (GT) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 38 runs to register a comeback win in the match number 51 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. After fifty-plus scores from skipper Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler, along with a crucial 23-ball 48 from Sai Sudharsan, the GT bowlers breathed fire as they restricted the visitors to 186/6, winning the match by 38 runs.
For the unversed, the captain of SRH, Pat Cummins, won the toss and decided to bowl first. This decision of Pat Cummins didn’t prove to pay any dividends as the GT top-order unleashed themselves. The opening pair of Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill stitched 87-run stand for the first wicket before the former was dismissed by Zeeshan Ansari soon after the end of the powerplay overs.
Shubman Gill (76 off 38) then stitched a key partnership with wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler for the second wicket, but was Heinrich Klaasen and Harshal Patel’s victim in a controversial run out. The SRh skipper then dismissed Buttler, who scored another 50-plus knock, followed by wickets of Washington Sunday, Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan in span of a few balls. However, the side put up a competitive score of 224/6 in their allotted 20 over, for the visitors, Jaydev Unadkat was the pick of the bowlers, scalping three wickets in his four-over spell. Pat Cummins and Zeeshan Ansari bagged a wicket apiece for SRH.
GT seal the second place in IPL 2025 standings with a win vs SRH
In the run chase, SRH got off to a flying start with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma in the middle. However, Prasidh Krishna broke the crucial stand, dismissing Head inside the powerplay overs. Although, Abhishek Sharma looked good, Ishan Kishan was dismissed cheaply after having scored 13 off 17 deliveries. Heinrich Klaasen also was dismissed after adding 23 runs off 18 balls.
Although, Ahishek Sharma powered the side to a decent score with his 41-ball 74, but wickets kept falling at regular intervals, bringing in signs of worry in the SRH camp and finally handing them a defeat, which more or less now keeps them out of the playoffs race. In the bowling department for the hosts, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna picked two wickets each, whereas Ishant Sharma and Gerald Coetzee also got one a piece in under their belt.
With a comprehensive 38-run win over SRH, GT jumped to second place in the IPL 2025 standings, having won seven of the ten games, SRH continue to reel at the ninth place with only three wins from as many games. The Shubman Gill-led GT will next travel to Mumbai to take on MI on Tuesday, May 6 at the Wankhede Stadium.
