Hardik Pandya, one of India's top fast-bowling all-rounders and the current captain of the Mumbai Indians, has become the hottest name in the IPL trade market after his decision to part ways with the franchise following a disappointing 2026 season. Reports indicate that seven IPL teams are keen on signing the 32-year-old, with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) emerging as a leading contender.
According to reports by Sahil Malhotra of TOI, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals are also in the mix, but the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have opted out of the competition. While talks are ongoing, nothing has been finalized yet.
The buzz around this potential high-profile move has picked up steam, especially after last year's groundbreaking trade involving Sanju Samson. That deal demonstrated that even star players and captains can switch teams if both franchises agree, the player gives written consent, and the IPL Governing Council gives the green light. For CSK, bringing in Pandya would not only bolster the middle order but also add a reliable Indian pace-bowling all-rounder, enhancing the team's balance in both batting and bowling departments.
Why CSK and KKR Are Pushing for Hardik Pandya
CSK sees Hardik Pandya as the perfect long-term addition for the team as they transition into the post-MS Dhoni era. With Ravindra Jadeja leaving last season, the franchise is on the hunt for an Indian all-rounder who can not only finish games but also make an impact with the ball. Pandya's impressive IPL stats consists of 2,955 runs at a strike rate of 146.29 and 82 wickets which makes him a natural choice.
There are whispers that a deal could involve a player swap, potentially including Shivam Dube along with either Khaleel Ahmed or Ayush Mhatre, though a straight cash deal is also on the table. However, there's a significant obstacle: CSK reportedly wants Ruturaj Gaikwad to remain captain, while Pandya is said to prefer a situation where he takes the lead. If the transfer happens, CSK will also need to fit his hefty IPL salary of ₹16.35 crore into their salary cap.
On the flip side, KKR is just as eager, looking for a long-term Indian captain and a solid seam-bowling all-rounder following Andre Russell's departure. Reports suggest that KKR is ready to offer Pandya the captaincy right away if he decides to join them. Their negotiations could involve either a direct cash payment of ₹16.35 crore or a player-plus-cash deal centered around Angkrish Raghuvanshi.
Meanwhile, RCB and SRH have opted out, citing limited salary flexibility, established leadership groups, and concerns about investing heavily after Pandya's recent performance, where he scored 206 runs at an average of 22.89 and took four wickets. Nevertheless, the other seven franchises still recognize his exceptional all-round capabilities and proven leadership in championship scenarios, making him one of the hottest names in this year's IPL trade window.
