England and India share an old fashioned, classic and huge rivalry in the great game of cricket. A sport actually invented by the British, mastered by the Indians and one in which England have two world cups across multiple white ball formats has seen the two sides from far reaching corners of the world interact and collide with much force unleashing brilliant talents and charisma on the field. And while England will certainly be hurting having only recently succumbed to a 2-1 Test series loss suffered at the hands of the visiting New Zealand side. And while there’s going to be no more test matches for the king of the Brits, the forces at work will be keen to overpower India, the brand new visitors on England’s shores- in a format that pulls the right punches and almost always produces magnificent cricketing entertainment all around.
But having said that, let’s also delve into the perspective of leadership and speaking of which one has to talk of the man with the midhas touch with the bat who always tends to lead by an example- Harry Brook. The man who has already struck a famous test match triple is England’s T20 captain and shall be keen to ask some difficult questions of his opposite number in the camp- Shreyas Iyer.
Together with the experienced heads on his side in the form of the dashing and world class Jos Buttler and the dangerous Phil Salt, the England T20I captain Harry Brook lends a touch of class and solidity to what is an already balanced looking line up. In the form of Jacob Bethell who most nearly took his English side home in Wankhede in that truly unforgettable T20 World Cup game held earlier in February, England have a steady middle order and their batting goes deep. Williams Jacks lends further credibility to a powerful batting line up and there’s some trial by spin and preeminent talent in the form of Adil Rashid, widely recognised as among the best spinners in all of world cricket.
On an individual team level, England have lost 17 games to India while winning 12, a record that they would definitely be aiming to better and get good at. Given this series is being held at their home conditions and given that no longer does the Indian batting feature the batting might of Sharma, Kohli and now, not even Pandya (out injured) and even Surya, could this be England’s win? We shall have to wait and see. Meanwhile, here’s the full team for the first game-
