Former New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson went down with knee injury while saving a boundary in the IPL 2023 opening match against Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad on Friday. The 32-year-old GT star had suffered a knee injury in the first match of the 16th season of the IPL and has been ruled out of the season.

The incident took place in the 13th over of the Blackcaps star's GT debut as CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad was on 71 off 36 when Kane attempted the flying catch. Had Williamson managed to pull of the catch, Gakiwad would've gone for 21 less runs than his original score of 92 runs.

Williamson had suffered the injury while he was trying to save a six that headed off Ruturaj Gaikwad’s bat. He was fieldling on the deep-square leg boundary. While Williamson leapt off to intercept the ball, he fell awkwardly thudding his right foot and was forced off the field 13 overs into the match.  Thereafter, Sai Sudarshan replaced him as an impact player.

Notably, Gujarat Titans started off the latest season of the Indian Premier League by taking over Dhoni-led Super Kings with an impressive five-wicket win. They will now play against Delhi Capitals on April 1, Monday, in Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
