England’s white-ball vice-captain and star batter Harry Brook is the front-runner to take over the reins as the Three Lions captain after veteran Jos Buttler stepped down from the role following their dismal performance in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025. According to sources close to SportsTiger, Brook is set to be named the skipper with the official announcement coming soon.
It is to be noted that the English batter was named Buttler’s deputy ahead of the white-ball series against India earlier this year. While he couldn’t contribute much with the bat in the white-ball series against India as well as the Champions Trophy 2025, he has been a vital player in the England setup.
Harry Brook will be next white-ball captain for England: Sources
The 26-year-old made his international debut in 2022 against West Indies. Despite a short stint so far, his numbers speak of his abilities. In 44 T20Is, he has scored 798 runs at an average of 28.50 and a strike rate of 146.15. In 26 ODI innings, Brook has amassed 816 runs, managing his highest score of 110*. A few days ago, Brook also clarified that he aims to proritise playing for his country, adding, " In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date. I know not everyone will understand, and I don't expect them to, but I have to do what I believe is right, and playing for my country remains my priority and focus. I remain hugely grateful for the opportunities I have been given and the support I receive."
If the sources claim to be true, he will be succeeding Jos Buttler, who resigned from the position. Speaking ahead of England’s final group stage match in recently-concluded Champions Trophy 2025, Buttler said, “I’m going to stand down as England captain. It’s the right decision for me and the right decision for the team. Hopefully somebody else who can come in alongside Baz will take the team to where it needs to be.”
