Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle defended elite international umpire Marais Erasmus after he acknowledged the umpiring error made in the 2019 World Cup final. Recently, the former umpire Erasmus revealed his conversation with Kumar Dharmasena about the error they made during the finale, which led to England lifting the World Cup for the first time. In one of the interviews, Erasmus said that he and Dharmasena conversed about how they made a huge error a day after the final.
He told Telegraph Cricket, "The next morning (after the final) I opened my hotel room door on my way to breakfast and Kumar opened his door at the same time and he said ‘Did you see we made a massive error’. That’s when I got to know about it. But in the moment on the field, we just said six, you know, communicated to each other ‘six, six, it’s six’ not realising that they haven’t crossed, it wasn’t picked up. That’s it."
He was an excellent umpire who got many more things right: Harsha Bhogle
Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle came in the defence of the South African umpire and said that he made many more right decisions than a few wrong ones. Bhogle said, "I look forward to a couple of tweets on what he did right as well because he was an excellent umpire who got many many more things right than wrong. It seems a bit unfair to reflect on a fine career by highlighting an error which he was gracious enough to admit."
Erasmus called it quits on international cricket umpiring last month after he officiated in the second Test between New Zealand and Australia. The 60-year-old began his career as an umpire in 2006 and was later included in the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Umpires in 2010.
