KL Rahul’s poor form has become a massive talking point among the Indian cricket fraternity. While few former cricketers have openly questioned and criticised Indian opener's inclusion in the Playing XI, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has come out in support of the Karnataka-born batter.

Gambhir has extended his backing to the Indian batter by citing how tough international cricket is.

“People who are talking about KL Rahul don’t know how tough international cricket is. I believe when a player is not performing, he needs more backing compared when he is playing well. Name one player who has scored runs from beginning to end. Everyone has faced that phase and you should back the talent,” Gambhir said.

He further cited how Rohit Sharma struggled in the early days of his career but came back strong. "When Rohit Sharma started his career, he struggled a lot but now look at his performance. There is absolute change. In the middle of the series this should not be talked about. India are 2-0 up. Each player in the dressing knows whether he is scoring or not. They all evaluate their performance. He should not be alone because we all know the quality of player he is,” Gambhir added.

The Lucknow Super Giants’ coach reiterated that Rahul deserves backing from team management for the way he has played earlier. “He has an amazing number in foreign conditions and if he will ever make a comeback, he will be great,” Gambhir said.

Notably, Rahul’s lack of runs from the bat has triggered a massive debate on social media as many are claiming that he should be dropped and batters like Shubman Gill must get a chance at the top order.
