Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title celebration took a tragic turn when the a large number of cricket fans became difficult to manage for Bengaluru authorities. After RCB's IPL trophy win, they organised a felicitation event at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and to witness the event, a massive crowd gathered outside the venue. Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister (CM) Siddaramaiah felicitated the champions at Vidhana Soudha. Following this, when the celebration went towards the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, over two lakh people accumulated at the venue which holds the capacity to host only 35000 people.
The presence of the heavy crowd ensued chaos as a deadly stampede occurred which went on to claim 11 lives. Apart from that, more than 50 people got severely injured as well. The incident has also led to the death of a child. When terrible scenes were taking place, the felicitation ceremony didn’t come to a halt as RCB and stadium authorities were unaware about the developments outside the venue. People who survived the stampede also asserted that there was no ambulance at the site.
Karnataka CM announces magisterial enquiry
Following the horrendous event, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah has announced magisterial enquiry which has been tasked to submit its report within 15 days. The CM has also announced a compensation of INR 10 lakh for the family of the victims. After this tragic incident, the Karnataka government is receiving constant criticism for their inability to manage the crowd.
The RCB management is also facing the fury of people as they feel that the team organised the event without any proper planning. Before organising the event at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, RCB were looking to conduct an open-top bus parade, which didn’t get permission from the government authorities.
