The ICC Hall of Famer, Sunil Gavaskar has launched a scathing attack on Team India captain Rohit Sharma and the entire Indian team for failing to deliver results in big matches in recent times. Ever since the 36-year-old took over the reins of Team India in all three formats, they are yet to win a major trophy.
During his leadership tenure alongside the head coach Rahul Dravid, the Indian captain Rohit Sharma has seen his team bow out of the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup in 2022, without reaching the final. They weren’t able to win the Test series in England and South Africa either, after taking the lead.

While speaking with the Indian Express at an event, Sunil Gavaskar was quoted as saying about Rohit Sharma, "I expected more from him. Even in the T20 format, with all the experience of the IPL, hundreds of matches as captain, with a mix of best IPL players not being able to get to the finals has been disappointing."
Shortly afterward, the former Indian captain turned his attention towards the preparation or lack thereof, which led to the team suffering a tough loss in the WTC Final 2023 against Australia. He said, "What kind of preparation are we talking about? Now they have gone to the West Indies. You have the example of the World Test Championship before you. Are you playing any matches? So what is this talk about 20-25 days?"
"When you talk about preparation, be genuine about it. Go 15 days before, and play two warm-up matches. The main guys can rest, but the fringe players might be actually challenging those who are not doing well. He does not get an opportunity to show that he is good enough," opined Gavaskar.
Sunil Gavaskar questions the senior Indian players over workload issue
Heralded as one of the greatest batters to play the game, Sunil Gavaskar called out the senior players for not travelling early to take part in important series for Team India while questioning them about their workload issue. He was quoted as saying to the Indian Express, "The truth is the main guys do not want to go early. Because they know that come what may, they will get selected. And when you go early they will talk about the workload.
"You call yourself the fittest team in the world or fitter than the early generations then how do you break down so soon? How do you have a workload issue when you play a 20-over game?" remarked the 74-year-old.
