Former Team India opener Virender Sehwag feels that the legendary batter Virat Kohli hung his boots from Test cricket too early. Kohli, 36, brought curtains down to his red-ball career after serving India for more than 13 years. The veteran batter was struggling in cricket’s longest format for a long time. In the crucial Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, he averaged 23.75 and scored only 190 runs in nine innings of five matches. Following his dismal performance in Australia, his fans were expecting him to travel to England for the five-match Test series and make a solid comeback with his bat. However, Kohli announced retirement from the format to bring an end to his iconic career.
Talking about Kohli’s massive decision, Sehwag hailed the star player’s fitness and remarked that the batting maestro could’ve played Test cricket for two more years. “Definitely. I feel he retired too early from the Test format. He could've played easily for two years, the way he maintains fitness. But only Virat Kohli can tell the reasons behind the decision. It's a player's personal decision based on his will, or whether he feels exhausted,” said Sehwag on CricBuzz.
Virat Kohli’s fans will want him to see in Cricket World Cup 2027
Within a year, Virat Kohli has retired from two formats of the sport (T20 Internationals and Test). With this development, his fans will now want him to maintain his stellar form in One-Day Internationals (ODI) so that he can be seen in action for India in the Cricket World Cup 2027 to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
His last ODI appearance happened in the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai, where he scored 218 runs in five matches at a strike rate of 82.88. In the group match against the arch-rivals Pakistan, he smashed an unbeaten 100 off 111 to guide the Men in Blue to a convincing six-wicket win.
