The Indian contingent put on a spectacular show at Paralympics 2020 on Monday to take India's overall medal tally to 7 in the ongoing Games. Avani Lekhara kicked off the proceedings by clinching a gold medal in the Women's 10m Air Rifle standing SH1 while Yogesh Kathuniya won a silver medal in the men's discus throw F56 event. The early momentum was continued by the Indian javelin throwers as Devendra Jhajharia and Sundar Singh Gurjar bagged silver and bronze respectively in Men's Javelin Throw F46 finals.
Just when we thought that things can't go better, there was icing on the cake provided by Sumit Antil who broke the world-record three time in the Men's Javelin Throw F64 finals. 4 medals in a single day was an absolutely remarkable performance by India as the nation climbed up to 26th position in the medal tally.
Neeraj Chopra requests everyone to give more love and support to Paralympians
The athletes are certainly creating history in Tokyo and India's golden boy and Tokyo Olympics Javelin champion Neeraj Chopra believes that the fans need to start lending more support to the Paralympians. The 23-year-old posted a video on his Twitter requesting everyone to follow the ongoing games and give more love and support to the participants in the coming days.
Reflecting on an unbelievable day for India in Tokyo, Neeraj Chopra said, "I was watching Paralympics and there have been some incredible performances by the Indian athletes in Tokyo. Avani won a gold medal, Sumit broke the world record to clinch gold. Devendra bhaishab and Sundar also won medals. Overall, all the athletes are performing really well."
"But I think that somewhere, we aren't following Paralympics that closely. I want everyone to please follow the Games and support the athletes who have gone to Tokyo to represent the country and are winning medals, despite so many challenges. Our support is very important for them so please follow Paralympics and support the athletes so that Indian sports can progress further," he concluded.
With 7 medals already in the bag, India have an amazing opportunity to touch the double-digit mark this year and create history. Some of the brightest medal contenders for the nation in form of Mariyappan Thangavelu and Pramod Bhagat are yet to feature in their events. With a crucial few days coming ahead, the athletes would certainly need the support of entire nation to bring glory.
