Mohun Bagan Athletic Club, one of the biggest professional football clubs in India, remembered the heroics of their legends by celebrating July 29 as “Mohun Bagan Day.” During the annual event, the Indian footballing superstar, Sunil Chhetri made an appearance this time around, to promote the autobiography “Sholo Ana Bablu,” of his father-in-law Subrata Bhattacharya, a Mohun Bagan and Indian football legend in his own right.

It was in 1911 when Mohun Bagan defeated the British regimental side East Yorkshire by 2-1 to win the IFA Shield, becoming the first Indian club to achieve this feat. The Men in Green and Maroon jersey overcame a one-goal deficit in the first half to take the victory in the dying moments of the match against the team in Black and White jersey.
The captain of the Indian football team talked about how Subrata Bhattacharya made a lasting impression on him in his formative years as a player. He was quoted as saying, “No matter what, play for the club, no matter what, play for the jersey. And I will never forget that teaching (from Subrata Bhattacharya).

Notably, the 38-year-old compared the enthusiasm of the club fans with what his father-in-law brings to the table for Mohun Bagan. He said, “I can see your face, I know how much you love your club, I have played for this club and I have played against this club and I understand how much you feel for this club. But I can tell you one thing, there are very few people in the world who I know, who feel for Mohun Bagan the way he does.”

“The day BFC (Bengaluru FC, the club for Sunil Chhetri) is playing Mohun Bagan …. there is one guy who wants me to score and BFC to lose and Mohun Bagan to win, it’s this guy (pointing at Subrata Bhattacharya),” he added.
