After India lost the ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia, there have been a lot of rumours about the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in limited-overs cricket. Wasim Akram, the former Pakistan captain, shared his views on the matter, stating that he will pick both Rohit and Virat in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.
On Sunday, November 19, Australia managed to win their sixth CWC trophy at the expense of India, but still, the flagship tournament was a happy hunting ground for both the senior players individually. Virat Kohli became the player of the ODI World Cup 2023, scoring a record-setting 765 runs at an average of 95.62 with three hundreds, while his teammate and captain Rohit Sharma was second only to him, putting together 597 runs at an average of 54.27 with one hundred.

During his interview with Sportskeeda, Wasim Akram talked about the importance of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the Indian cricket team with the T20 World Cup 2024 on the horizon. He was quoted as saying, “The T20 World Cup is happening within six months from now. I will pick both of them (Rohit and Virat). They will be the main players for India right now, both Virat and skipper Rohit. You need a bit of experience in T20. Saarey young bachchey nahi rakh sakte aap (You can't keep only the youngsters).”
Notably, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli haven’t played in the T20I format for India since the semi-final loss against England in the T20 World Cup 2022. With only six T20I matches remaining before the T20 World Cup 2024, wherein these two senior players can potentially get picked in the Indian squad, the time is running out for them to make the final decision about their international careers in the shortest format of the game.
