In the second T20 International (T20I) between Australia and South Africa in Darwin, the latter team bagged a 53-run win, riding on their young batter Dewald Brevis’ sensational batting display. South Africa posted 218 runs on the board and more than a half of the contribution came from Brevis’ bat. He scored an unbeaten 125 off just 56. His innings was studded with 20 boundaries (12 fours and eight maximums). It was the best knock of the 20-year-old’s career and South Africa's T20I history. His knock helped the Proteas level the series by 1-1 and the decider will now be played in Brisbane on August 16.
Following his magnificent batting performance, Dewald Brevis appeared in a presser and said that it was his natural gameplay. "That's just my natural way of hitting. I've hit thousands of balls and I just want to go out there, enjoy it and have fun and just watch it and then if it's there, it happens. I don't try to do it, I'm just trying to be myself and have fun and watch the ball and then it happens," said Brevis. He also remarked that he would’ve loved to be with the team earlier as well but getting dropped from the side in 2023 made him stronger only. "I would have loved to be here earlier but that's all a part of your journey and that's what makes you stronger. That's why I'm here now," added Brevis.
South Africa win their first T20I game against Australia
With the comfortable win, South Africa have won their first T20I against Australia after February 2020. Before this contest, the Aussie side won six consecutive matches in the shortest form of the sport. The Proteas will now look to be at their best in the final game to clinch the series. South Africa won their last red-ball series in November 2019.
After the three T20Is, both teams will lock horns against each other in the three ODIs. Queensland’s Cairns and Mackay will host the matches. Both teams will play their first 50-over game after the Champions Trophy 2025 held in Pakistan and Dubai this year.
