In Roseau, Dominica, India took the ascendency in the first Test match on day 1 with a commanding performance against the hosts. West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss and chose to bat first in relatively batting-friendly conditions at Windsor Park.

The start from the openers, including Tagenarine Chanderpaul and the leader of the Caribbean team was quite solid against the new ball. They played out a menacing spell from Mohammed Siraj and Jaydev Unadkat to put together a 31-run stand. In response with the bat, the Indian captain and opener Rohit Sharma combined with the debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal to take the team to the close of play on day 1 at 80/0.
