The Indian team is currently playing a five-match T20I series against South Africa. After three T20Is, the scoreline stands 2-1 in favour of the visitors. Currently, Rishabh Pant is India's stand-in captain in absence of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. Rohit Sharma has been given rest post IPL 2022 while KL Rahul injured himself a day before first T20I at Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi.

With this, the selectors ended up giving opportunity to youngsters like Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, and more. However, both Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh are yet to make debut for India. Further, the likes of Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah have also been rested for this series. Whereas Suryakumar, after scoring 303 runs from just eight IPL 2022 matches, is out with an injury. In their absence, Iyer batted at No. 3 and racked up 36 (27) and 40 (35) in India's first two T20Is against South Africa before scoring 14 (11) in the third game.

Shreyas Iyer to lose his spot in team?

However, once he returns, he is likely to regain his spot. On this, Wasim Jaffer was asked whether Shreyas Iyer could lose his spot in team once Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav return to India's squad.

On this, he said, "I think yes. Suryakumar Yadav, if he's fit, walks into Team India and Virat Kohli will be back at No. 3 as well so unless he shows really great form, Shreyas Iyer will lose his spot.”

India will play 2 T20Is against South Africa while 1 T20I against Ireland before England series. It will be interesting to see if Shreyas Iyer can do something extraordinary to make sure his place in team in secure.
