Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat and her husband Somvir Rathee have announced their pregnancy via a social media post on Thursday, March 6. Vinesh, who had suffered a recent heartbreak in the Paris Olympics 2024, said that she is ready to start a new chapter in her life. Phogat, who got disqualified from the finals of the 50 kg freestyle wrestling category in the 2024 Paris Olympics as she was found slightly overweight in the morning weigh-in before the second day of her event, decided to retire from amateur wrestling after that. She has since then joined politics and is currently a member of the legislative assembly in Haryana.

Vinesh Phogat won the 2024 assembly election from Julana constituency representing the Indian National Congress. She was also the face of the wrestler's protest alongside other big names like Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik etc., during the year 2023. The group of elite wrestlers was protesting against chief of the Indian wrestling federation; Brij Bushan Singh and the federation’s coaches for alleged sexual harassment of younger female wrestlers.

A glorious career for Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat

Vinesh Phogat had a glorious wrestling career as she was the only Indian female wrestler to reach an Olympic final and also participate in three Olympic editions. She has won numerous other major medals in international tournaments. She has an impressive three gold medals in the Commonwealth Games and two bronze medals in the Wrestling World Championships. In fact, she is the only Indian woman with multiple medals in World Wrestling Championships in her career.

Moreover, she has an equally impressive record in Asia, winning a medal in every single Asian Championships that she has played. She has a total of four bronze, three silvers and one gold medal in all the Asian Championships. She has also been conferred with the Arjuna Award and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2016 and 2020 respectively. However, she had returned both of these awards to the government during the 2023 wrestling protests.
