Birmingham Commonwealth Games silver medallist Abdulla Aboobaker was on a roll winning gold at Japan meet earlier this month, followed by a bronze medal at the Montreal Athletics meet last week. Despite a good start to the season, the triple jumper finished at an sixth position at the Florence Diamond League 2023.

Aboobacker had the best attempt of 16.37m at his Diamond League debut. However, it is much lower than his best of 17.19m which came in 2022 at the Indian Grand Prix, Bhubaneswar. The 27-year-old athlete’s best came on the second try while he fouled on his first, third, and fifth attempts and registered 15.95m on his fourth. Andy Diaz from Cuba won the Florence Diamond League triple jump event with his personal best of 17.75m in his first try, while Burkina Faso's Fabrice Hugues Zango finished at second place with a 17.68m jump.


The Kerala-born athlete won the silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a result of 17.02 m (55.8 ft). It is to be noted that the meeting in Florence was the third leg of the Diamond League, which is an annual series of top-tier track and field competitions. The next Diamond League meet is set to be hosted in Paris, France on June 9. This year, the Diamond League Final will be held in Eugene, USA on September 16 and 17.
