India’s Aruna Tanwar has withdrawn herself from the repechage quarter-finals of Paralympics taekwondo Women K44-49kg on Thursday due to a suspected hairline fracture. The Indian fought two bouts on Thursday (round of 16 and quarterfinal) and got injured during her first bout victory. Aruna has been taken to a hospital in Tokyo for further evaluation and scans and a hairline fracture is suspected. Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) chief Deepa Malik confirmed the news.

“Sorry to inform that our Tigress has got injured in her bout. Suspected hairline fracture. She won her first match with a great margin but we could notice the energy missing in second one. Swelling has increased and needs medical attention,” Deepa Malik wrote on Twitter.
Indian delegation has explained Aruna’s withdrawal from the repechage quarterfinal is due to a “probable fracture of left forearm and possible fracture of right foot”. The withdrawal form also stated that Aruna’s decision to pull out is due to “severe pain and dysfunction due to the above injuries”.
Aruna Tanwar played some valiant bouts in Tokyo Paralympics
Aruna Tanwar, who is India’s first taekwondo athlete to make it to the Paralympics was up against Serbia’s Danijela Jovanovic in her round of 16 bout and made an early statement in the Games by beating her opponent by 29-9 in three rounds. She took an early lead of 8-4 at the end of round 1 and increased her lead to 14-7 before the third round started. She then defeated Jovanovic by 29-9 after three rounds. However, an injury in her round of 16 bout disallowed the young Indian to win against her quarterfinal opponent Leonor Espinoza Carranza. She lost the quarterfinal match by 84-21 after putting a valiant fight.
Aruna, who hails from Dinod- a village in Haryana, was scheduled to take on Azerbaijan’s Royala Fataliyeva in the repechage quarter-final on Thursday at 2PM IST. The semi-finals and the medal matches are also scheduled to take place in the same day. However, India would hope that its daughter recovers well and quickly to see her roar in any further competitions.
