The Indian Grand Prix 4 in Patiala produced some scintillating performances by the Indian athletes on Monday. It was shot-putter Tajinder Singh Toor who stole the show with his incredible throw of 21.49m as he crossed the Olympic Qualification mark of 21.10m by some margin. The 26-year-old broke the national record which he had only set in 2019 with 20.92m throw.
After this unbelievable effort by Tajinder, he has certainly become a medal prospect for India in the forthcoming Tokyo Olympics now as interestingly, the bronze medalist in Rio 2016 Olympics got 21.36m. He himself claimed that his next target is to cross the 22m mark as soon as possible.
Indian women athletes shine on Monday
It was a record-breaking day for Indian women athletes in Patiala. Discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur, who had already qualified for Tokyo Olympics, set a new national record (66.59m) with a breathtaking effort, bettering her previous throw of 65.06m by some margin.
On the other hand, Dutee Chand also improved her own national record in 100m even by 0.05 seconds as she clocked a timing of 11.17s, narrowly missing out on Tokyo Olympic entry standard which is 11.15s. However, she is still in contention to qualify for the games as per her rankings.
The Indian Women 4x100m relay team also created a new national record with a sensational timing of 43.37s (earlier best was 43.42s). Unfortunately, it was still not fast enough for them to seal a spot in Tokyo Olympics.
