Punjab Kings

Can new name bring new fortune for the Punjab side? They would certainly hope so. They are one of the three teams that are yet to win the IPL. In the 2020 edition, they ended the league in the 6th position. The KL Rahul- led side has 9 slots to be filled, and they have 53.2 crores left with them. They have 3 overseas players in their squad right now, and can pick 5 more. The side has a pretty strong batting line up but they will look to bolster their bowling attack.

The IPL 2021 Auction is all set to take place on February 18th in Chennai. With so much buzz around the auctions, there are some major developments that have occurred which can have an impact on the approach of the franchises during the auctions. Let’s have a look at a few talking points ahead of the much-anticipated auction.

Mohammed Azharuddeen: Hot-pick for 2021 Auction

[caption id="attachment_1375" align="aligncenter" width="760"] Picture Credit: Twitter[/caption]

26-year-old Mohammed Azharuddeen, a swashbuckling wicket-keeping batsman, recently came into limelight after becoming the first Kerala cricketer to smash a century in a T20 match (137* off 54 against Mumbai in SMAT 2021). The batsman became an overnight star after playing one of the finest innings in the history of the tournament. He will go under the hammer at a base price of INR 20 Lakhs. It would be interesting to see which franchises bid for him and where the talented Kerala cricketer eventually lands up.

It has been reported that Delhi Capitals’ head-coach Ricky Ponting will not be travelling to Chennai for the Auction. In his absence, assistant coaches Mohammed Kaif and Pravin Amre should be at the helm of the Delhi Capitals’ table during the IPL auctions on Thursday. From the management side, chairman Kiran Kumar Gandhi, owner Parth Jindal and the analysts are expected to join them. DC captain Shreyas Iyer will also be unavailable as he is preparing for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy.

MS Dhoni will attend the Auction virtually

Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and head-coach Stephen Fleming will take part in the Auction virtually. CSK's CEO Kashi Vishwanath confirmed that the duo would stay connected with the team through online mediums. He said, “They (Fleming and Dhoni) are not coming to Chennai for IPL Auctions but in today’s time, there are so many mediums to stay connected. They will be with us digitally.”

Major upset for IPL Franchises

IPL Franchises have suffered a major setback ahead of the Player Auction. As per reports, South African players could miss the initial part of IPL 2021. They have a white-ball series scheduled against Pakistan, which ends on April 16th. It can also have an impact on the bidding of South African all-rounder Chris Morris. Teams might not want to spend too much on a player who would be unavailable in the beginning of the tournament. Meanwhile, New Zealand and England are also scheduled to play a Test series from June 2nd. Hence, the players involved in that series could miss the business end of the mega-tournament. Franchises might be slightly reluctant now to go for hot-targets like Moeen Ali and Kyle Jamieson during the auction.

It would be interesting to see how the various franchises react to these recent developments during the Player Auction on Thursday.
