In a big update, another Olympian has been hospitalised after taking a swim in River Seine during the recently-concluded Summer Olympics in Paris. The double medal-winning Irish Olympian, Daniel Wiffen on Monday revealed that he was rushed to a hospital with a stomach bug, two days after participating in the marathon swimming, which took place in River Seine.
Wiffen, who was named Ireland’s flagbearer in the Paris Olympics 2024 closing ceremony, failed to take part after the infection led him to land in hospital. Taking to social media, Wiffen himself revealed his side of story. “Thanks everyone who reached out, I’m incredibly disappointed to miss out on the opportunity to be flag bearer last night,” he began.
"Yesterday I rushed to hospital as I was very unwell with a bug that I am being treated for, and am feeling better now." It is to be noted that Wiffen took part in the men's 10-kilometre marathon swim in the River Seine on Friday, finishing 18th with a timing of 1 hour 58 minutes, however he refrained from directly relating his illness to the water.
While this is not the first case, earlier Belgium’s Claire Michel was also hospitalised after suffering from vomiting and diarrhea due to virus. Moreover, several water events were postponed due to pollution in River Seine during the 15-day quadrennial Games in Paris.
