Chelsea manager Enzo Marseca addressed the press before his team’s game against Everton, scheduled to be played on Saturday, April 26. While a lot many topics were touched upon in the pre-match conference, a few questions were surrounding the overall summary of Maresca’s season at Chelsea and whether it can be considered a success as they are well off the title race. Chelsea is currently sitting in sixth place with 57 points from 33 games and are in contention for a heated UCL spot race in the PL table. Due to Arsenal’s heroics in the UCL, it was reported that 5 PL teams would qualify for next year’s Champions League.
While the first and second position seems to be sealed by Liverpool and Arsenal, there is just a four-point gap separating the third and seventh place team; which will result in some intense conclusive match-days with every of those teams fighting for a UCL spot. Chelsea have been in the top four for most parts of the season and can secure a European spot with victories in these crucial games ahead. While some reporters criticized Maresca’s current managerial stint at Chelsea, the Italian tactician hit back by saying that he has potentially brought Chelsea to the European stage for next season; which is something the club has failed to do for the last two seasons.
Maresca fancies Chelsea’s chances in heated PL top 5 race
Maresca drew parallels to the last two seasons by saying that he feels that this is progress for the club. Although he emphasized that he wasn’t content by the fact that Chelsea is not challenging the title, he is still willing to focus on the positive side of things and only build further in the coming season. He said, “How many times in the last two years have Chelsea been in UCL? How many? Zero. How many times been in UCL spot in the table this season? Almost all season.”
He bashed out at the questions being asked by further saying, “Is it an improvement or not? It's already an improvement because we have spent all season there. Now, we are going to try our best to finish there, no doubt. We want to finish there, no doubt.” Chelsea will take on Everton at Stamford Bridge tomorrow at 5:00pm IST.
