English Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on signing England midfielder James Maddison from Leicester City following their relegation to the Championship. Despite strong interest from Newcastle United, the Spurs are reportedly in pole position to sign the 26-year-old midfielder with personal terms being agreed with Leicester City on a £40m deal. Ahead of his transfer to Tottenham, Maddison deleted his old tweets where he mentioned not liking the Spurs and his hatred towards former Spurs forward Gareth Bale.

According to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham and Leicester City had a verbal agreement in place for a deal worth around £40m with personal terms have been agreed between the two clubs. The reports suggested that the midfielder will undergo a medical at Tottenham on Wednesday, June 28.

Soon after the reports emerged on social media about Maddison's possible transfer to Tottenham from Leicester, the English midfielder's old tweets about the Spurs and Gareth Bale resurfaced. In November 2012, Maddison wrote, "I hate Gareth Bale with a passion, calm down you monkey, Wilshere is 10x better than you chimpanzee." Followed by his March 2013 tweet that read, "Hope Luis Suarez destroys Tottenham today, don't like Spurs! Especially that monkey that everyone's on about!"

Australian coach  Ange Postecoglou will take on the managerial role for Tottenham Hotspur on July 1 this year and ahead of his arrival, the Spurs are looking to strengthen their squad. Tottenham have already made  Dejan Kulusevski's loan move from Juventus permanent while they have also signed goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario this summer as Hugo Lloris' successor for a £17.2m deal.

Maddison joined Leicester City from Norwich in 2018 for a fee of around £20m and has played 203 matches for the Foxes scoring  55 goals and providing 41 assists. Maddison scored 10 goals in the Premier League last season but was unable to prevent the club from getting relegated.
