Jasmine Lamboria, the Indian women’s boxer, secured a Paris 2024 quota after defeating Mali’s Marine Camara 5-0 in the women’s 57kg quarterfinals at the second World Boxing qualifiers in Bangkok on Sunday, June 2. With that, she became the fourth Indian women’s boxer, who is set to embark on a journey to the Olympics in Paris later this year.
Notably, Jasmine Lamboria won the Olympic quota in Bangkok, which India had lost after Parveen Hooda, the bronze medalist at the Asian Games 2022, received a suspension for 22 months for a whereabouts failure. The 22-year-old stepped up for the nation in a difficult situation with the Olympic quota on the line, creating an opportunity for herself in the process at the Paris 2024.
This was the sixth overall quota for India in boxing at the upcoming Olympics, with the third one coming at the World Boxing qualifiers this week. Before Jasmine Lamboria’s success, it was Amit Panghal in the men’s 51kg category and Nishant Dev in the men’s 71kg category, who won the Paris 2024 quota.
The bronze medalist from Tokyo 2020, Lovlina Borgohain (women’s 75kg), Nikhat Zareen (Women’s 50kg), and Preeti Pawar (Women’s 54kg) have already clinched the Olympic quotas for India after their success at the Asian Games 2022. They will be joined by Jasmine Lamboria at the Olympics later this year, to represent India at the one of the biggest sporting spectacles in the world in France this July.
