On Saturday, March 16, Jay Shah, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary, confirmed that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 will not have some of its matches happen overseas. The clarification came after the reports emerged about the possibility of the IPL getting shifted to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), because of the Indian general elections.
In his short comment to Cricbuzz, the BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, indirectly stated that the entire 2024 season of the IPL will be played in India. He was quoted as saying, “No, it (IPL) won’t be moved overseas,” signalling an end to the speculation about the franchise T20 tournament going abroad.
There were also reports about how some IPL teams had requested relocating the matches due to upcoming general elections in India, apart from claims about the BCCI exploring the option of hosting the second half of the tournament in UAE. But, with the latest comments from Jay Shah, all the speculations have come to pass.
Moreover, the full schedule of the IPL 2024 might be released soon by the BCCI after the Election Commission of India announced the dates for hosting the general elections in the country. As of this writing, the BCCI has only announced the dates of the first 21 matches of the upcoming season of the IPL, from March 22 to April 7.
As far as the Indian general elections are concerned, the polling will happen in seven phases from April 19 to June 1 before the counting of votes commences on June 4, to decide the next Prime Minister of India.
