American gymnast, Jordan Chiles' bronze medal in artistic gymnastics at the Paris 2024 Olympics came into the radar after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) plea by Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu. The Romanian approached the CAS after her coaches discovered that the judges made a mistake in deduction, followed by CAS’ hearing on Saturday, August 10.
The legal body for sports, CAS stated that Chiles was wrongly granted an inquiry because it was not filed within one-minute limit. Meanwhile Team USA also opened up on the same, stating, “We are devasted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling regarding women’s floor exercise. The inquiry into the Difficulty Value of Jordan Chiles’ floor exercise routine was filed in good faith and, we believed, in accordance with FIG rules to ensure accurate scoring.”
Jordan Chiles must return bronze after scoring change: IOC
American gymnast, Jordan Chiles is set to return the bronze medal after the scoring update at the Paris Olympics 2024 post CAS’ verdict. In her place, Romania’s Ana Barbosu is set to receive the medal and the International Olympic Committee is looking into the matter. As per the scorecard reflected on August 5 at the event, Barbosu finished in third place with a score of 13.700 after Rebeca Andrade’s 14.166 and Simone Biles’ 14.133. Whereas Chiles finished at fifth place with a score of 13.666.
The IOC on Sunday confirmed that they are reallocating the bronze after the international Gymnastics Federation said on Saturday that it would respect the court’s decision. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) voided the inquiry, saying US coach Cecile Landi's appeal to get 0.1 added to Chiles' score was outside the window of one minute, allowed by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).
“Following the CAS decision with regard to the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Floor Exercise Final and the amendment of the ranking by the International Gymnastics Federation, the IOC will reallocate the bronze medal to Ana Barbosu (Romani). We are in touch with the NOC of Romania to discuss the reallocation ceremony and with the USOPC regarding the return of the bronze medal,” statement of IOC read.
