The powerplay overs in the IPL, the first six, are meant for fireworks. With only two fielders outside the circle, batters usually go on the attack, aiming to maximize runs. But not every day is a batter’s paradise. Poor shot selection, disciplined bowling, and tough pitch conditions can turn these six overs into a nightmare for batting teams. Let’s take a look at some of the most forgettable powerplay performances in IPL history.

Lowest powerplay scores in IPL history

During a match at Pune, Sunrisers Hyderabad faced a brutal start against Rajasthan Royals. Prasidh Krishna and Trent Boult swung the new ball masterfully, dismantling SRH’s top order. By the end of the powerplay, SRH were reeling at 14/3, equaling the lowest-ever powerplay score in IPL history in 2022.

In the IPL 2009, at Cape Town’s Newlands, Rajasthan Royals faced a nightmare opening. Against Royal Challengers Bangalore, they managed just 14/2 in the powerplay. The South African conditions offered swing, and RCB’s bowlers, particularly Praveen Kumar, capitalized. The Royals’ batters were bogged down by dot balls and early wickets, leaving them on the back foot right from the start.

The giants like Chennai Super Kings have had their struggles in the powerplay stage in the IPL over the years. At Eden Gardens, against a fired-up Kolkata Knight Riders bowling unit, CSK crawled to 15/2 in the powerplay. Brett Lee’s pace and accuracy, combined with tight spells from Yusuf Pathan and Shakib Al Hasan, made scoring extremely difficult.

Next up in Raipur, during 2015, Chennai Super Kings found themselves tied down once more. Facing Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals), they eked out just 16/1 in the powerplay. Zaheer Khan, bowling with guile and precision, swung the new ball beautifully. The Delhi bowlers kept things tight, ensuring CSK couldn’t find boundaries or rotate strike effectively.

And finally, opening the IPL 2019 season in Chennai, CSK again found themselves in powerplay trouble. Royal Challengers Bangalore (now Bengaluru), led by Yuzvendra Chahal and pacer Navdeep Saini, choked the run flow early. On a sluggish Chepauk track, run-scoring was a challenge, and CSK ended the powerplay with just 16 runs on the board, losing Shane Watson early.
