It is now understood that Real Madrid’s 39-year-old midfielder Luka Modric wants to stay at the club for another year, as reported by Fabrizio Romano. Modric’s current deal with Los Blancos runs until June 2025 and the Croatian midfielder is interested in extending his current contract by at least one year. It is o be noted that Modric joined Real Madrid back in 2012 and has since been at the club for almost 13 years. Having established himself as one of the best midfielders to don the Madrid jersey, Modric has played a staggering 616 games for Real Madrid, scoring 43 goals and providing 93 assists in the process.
Luka Modric is the kind of player for whom stats don’t show the entire picture, as his impact for Los Blancos in the middle of the park has been beyond just numbers. In the current season, he has played 44 games for Real Madrid, with 11G/A across all competitions. He is currently training with the Croatian national team for the upcoming international matches.
Does Modric have another year of football in him?
Although Modric has played a high number of games this season, he has not started most of the matches for Real Madrid. Off the 44 matches, he has come off the bench on 24 occasions as Carlo Ancelotti prefers to play younger players in his setup. The decision is understandable with reference to Modric’s age, who is currently 39 years old and well past his prime. However, this is not the case for the national team.
Luka Modric has started every single game for the Croatian national team since the start of last year, including the Euros 2024 and has in fact been the captain for the national team in every match. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Modric starts against France in Croatia’s upcoming match in the Nation’s League on 21st March. With all this it will be interesting to see whether the Real Madrid management believes that Modric has another year of football left in him to play with the club at the highest level.
