World No 1 Magnus Carlsen defeated defending champion Gukesh Dommaraju and United States’ Fabiano Caruana to clinch the Norway Chess 2025 title on June 6. This is Carlsen’s second consecutive win in the Norway Chess tournament as he was the winner of the 2024 edition of the competition as well. With this success, he has won the Norway Chess competition for the sixth time. Entering the last round, Carlsen and Gukesh were separated by just half a point. Besides both players, two more were in contention to win the title. However, Gukesh failed to hold his nerves against Caruana while Magnus succeeded in forcing a draw on Gukesh’s compatriot Arjun Erigaisi.
Carlsen concluded at the top of standings after accumulating 16 points from 10 rounds while Caruana got 15.5 points and ended up in the second spot with the victory against Gukesh in the final round. Gukesh concluded his tournament in third place with 14.5 points. Arjun, who started the tournament exceptionally, finished his campaign in the fifth spot with 13 points. America’s Hikaru Nakamura and China’s Wei Yi had to satiate with the fourth and sixth positions respectively.
Anna Muzychuk emerges victorious in the women’s competition
In the women’s segment, Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk became the champion of the tournament with 16.5 points. Muzychuk came close to winning the 2024 installment of Norway Chess but had to satisfy herself with the runners-up position. Following her, Chinese Grandmaster Lei Tingjei, who hoarded 16 points, winded up the tournament as runners-up.
India’s Koneru Humpy had to settle for the third spot with 15 points. Another Indian player Vaishali Rameshbabu finished at fifth place with 11 points. China’s Ju Wenjun and Spain’s Sara Khadem earned the fourth and sixth spots respectively with 13.5 and nine points apiece.
