Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has been promoted to blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the billionaire revealed on his Instagram. He was coached by fifth-degree black belt holder Dave Camarillo on his journey to earn the blue belt. Zuckerberg’s skill in mixed martial arts has seen him emerge as the favorite in a potential fight against Elon Musk.
The former world’s youngest billionaire has spent a considerable amount of money on his Jiu-Jitsu journey, including hiring one of the best one on one coaches around, Dave Camarillo. Camarillo has coached Cain Velasquez, Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck, and Mike Swick and has also coached actors such as Keanu Reeves for his role in the John Wick series. The Meta executive made sure to thank his instructor for his help.
He wrote, “Congrats Dave Camarillo on your 5th-degree black belt. You’re a great coach and I’ve learned so much about fighting and life from training with you. Also honored to be promoted to compete at blue belt for Guerrilla San Jose team.”
Zuckerberg faced controversy at the first BJJ match
With his blue belt now secured, Mark Zuckerberg will hope that the public will take him more seriously as a fighter following the controversy surrounding his first official BJJ match. Specifically, it was unclear whether or not Zuckerberg got “slept” in his match.
The referee of the match, Lucas Costa, revealed to Bloody Elbow’s Eugene Robinson, “There was no argument (that Zuckerberg got knocked out). It was in Gi and he got choked out. That was the video you saw. I stopped it and he wanted to check with me about why I stopped it. He didn’t know what was happening, which was one of the reasons I stopped it. But he had started to snore and the rule set says that snoring is a version of a verbal tap.”
Zuckerberg’s camp, however, denied this as a spokeswoman for the Meta executive said, “At no point during the competition was Mark knocked unconscious.” Costa said he called off the fight after looking into Mark’s eyes and realizing he was unconscious. “I was looking straight into his eyes. That’s what made me stop. He had a dead look.”
The 38-year-old Tech entrepreneur competed at the BJJ Tour in Woodside, California, where he won Gold in the Nogi Master 1 White Belt Featherweight Division and Silver in the Gi Master 2 White Belt Featherweight Division.
