Mumbai Indians took on Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 33 of the 2025 IPL at the Wankhede Stadium on 17th April. Both the teams were coming in with a win in their previous match and a hunger to carry the momentum forward. MI came out victorious with a 5-wicket win after a solid all-round performance in front of the home-crowd. The victory marks the third of the season for the Mumbai franchise as they look to keep their playoff hopes alive. SRH has fallen further with the 5th defeat of the season tarnishing their ambitions and dreams for the 2025 IPL.

For the unversed, MI won the toss and opted to bowl first, which was seen as a very bold decision by some considering the batting-friendly surface of the Wankhede stadium and SRH’s firepower. But MI skipper Hardik Pandya seemed to have nailed the decision as MI’s bowling attack gave a really hard time to the SRH batters. After adopting a rather cautious approach which is very uncharacteristic of the SRH openers, the team was restricted to just 46 in the powerplay. Abhishek Sharma’ knock of 40 and Klaasen’s 37 were the highest knocks of the first innings. A late quick-fire 8-ball 18 from Aniket Varma and a handy six from skipper Pat Cummins ensured that Hyderabad crossed the 150 mark and put up 162/5 in 20 overs.

Solid team-effort guides MI to third victory of 2025 season

As expected, MI got in Rohit Sharma as the impact player who opened the innings alongside Ryan Rickelton. Rohit got the crowd on its feet hitting three big sixes before getting dismissed for 26 of 16 by Pat Cummins. The other opener Rickelton was cleaned up by Harshal Patel after scoring 31 of 23. Will Jacks and Suryakumar Yadav stitched together a 52-run partnership to put MI firmly in the driving seat. Finally, skipper Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma finished the job for MI with impactful knocks of 21 (9) and 21*(17).

Up next, Mumbai Indians will take on arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings on Sunday, 20th April at the Wankhede stadium, hoping to get revenge from the reverse fixture that happened earlier. On the other hand, Sunrisers will be out to get revenge from their tonight’s opponents as they play the reverse fixture against MI itself on 23d April at the Rajiv Gandhi International stadium
