Michael Vaughan, a former England captain, has questioned the media's reaction back home in England following the murder of a 15-year-old secondary school boy in Sheffield. According to UK media sources, Harvey Willgoose, 15, was hurt on Monday at All Saints Catholic High School on Granville Road. The paramedics helped him, but was declared dead. Vaughan was born in Manchester and moved to Sheffield with his family when he was nine. Between 1999 and 2008, he appeared in 82 Tests, 86 ODIs, and two T20Is.
Vaughan held media accountability on his official X account for not making it essential news. “A young 15 yr old is murdered at a school in Sheffield and it’s not the main headline news at 10 … RIP Harvey Willgoose … x" Vaughan posted on X (formerly Twitter). According to reports, the police have arrested a 15-year-old boy under the suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.
Closure of the school until further notice
There is shock and sorrow among parents and students in the town. Moreover, with the top-class international cricketer Vaughan questioning the media, the case is gaining maximum exposure.
Meanwhile, the headteacher of the school has also released a statement regarding the case. "With immense shock and regret, I have to inform you that one of our students has been fatally stabbed. Tomorrow (Tuesday), the school will be closed for all students, and further information will be issued to you with any updates," headteacher Sean Pender wrote in an official statement to parents as quoted in News18.
“We will ensure that there are counselling and support services available for any student and staff member directly affected by this tragic incident. We are currently working with the police as part of their investigation into this fatality. Our thoughts and prayers are with our student who we lost today and his family. Please remember them and our whole school community in your thoughts and prayers," Sean Pender further wrote.
Following the death incident, the police declared a state of lockdown, resulting in student dismissal in smaller clusters. Students at a nearby school were also placed on lockdown as a precaution.
