Mohammed Shami, the Indian fast bowler, is unlikely to play for India in the upcoming five-match Test series in England, with just days remaining until the impending announcement of the squad from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The Indian selection committee is set to take the final call on the Indian squad for the England Test tour in the next couple of days, wherein they will also name the new captain of the side after the retirement of Rohit Sharma.

As per the latest report published in the Indian Express regarding the matter, Mohammed Shami won’t be able to bowler longer spells in Test matches as per the BCCI medical team. They have advised the Indian selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar about how the chances of the Indian pacer playing all the five Tests on the England tour are bleak, which is why his involvement in the series probably won’t happen.

The board and selectors don’t know whether Shami can bowl more than 10 overs in a day: Sources

One of the sources privy to the Mohammed Shami situation in the BCCI was quoted as saying about it, “Shami is bowling four overs in IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad but the board and selectors don’t know whether he can bowl more than 10 overs in a day. Test matches in England may demand longer spells from the pacers and we can’t take chances.”

Moreover, the report further stated that with the Indian selection committee looking at the bowler’s ability to bowl longer spells, and with Jasprit Bumrah already informing the BCCI about his inability to bowl for more than three Tests in a row, Mohammed Shami’s Test future is looking quite bleak. The 34-year-old last played a Test match for India in the summer of 2023, which was a World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at The Oval in London.
