The Indian Super League Mohun Bagan Super Giant parted ways with its head coach Juan Ferrando after a series of poor results in the 2023-24 season. Ferrando had led the side to an ISL title in the 2022–2023 season, as well as helped the team win their record 17th Durand Cup win this season. The Mohun Bagan management decided after the team failed to deliver notable performances as well as were eliminated from the AFC Cup in the early stage of the tournament. Ferrando has been replaced by the former manager and current technical director Antonio Lopez Habas.
Habas will take over the interim role with the Kalinga Super Cup, scheduled to take place from January 9 to January 28, 2024. The ISL club took to social media to thank Ferrando for his services. The club on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “For the ISL Cup win, for the Durand Cup win, for the numerous memories, thank you, Juan!” In another tweet, the club wrote, “Some stories cannot be left incomplete…Welcome back, Señor Habas”
Ferrando has been one of the most successful and finest managers that Mohun Bagan has ever had. The newly-appointed interim coach returns to the side after being sacked in favour of Ferrando in 2021 and has won ISL with ATK and Atletico de Kolkata in 2014 and 2019-20, respectively. The Mariners currently sit in the fifth spot in the ISL League side with seven points behind the Kerala Blasters.
They lost last their last three games against the Mumbai City FC, FC Goa, and Kerala Blasters. The Spaniard moved to Kolkata after having managed FC Goa. In his final game as the manager, the team lost their clash against Kerala Blasters 1-0.
