Chennai Super Kings (CSK) stand-in captain MS Dhoni looked disappointed after his team’s five-wicket defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 game played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 25. Batting first in their home game, Chennai could post only 154 in 19.5 overs. Their batting unit performed miserably again which became the major cause of the Yellow Army’s loss. Except for Dewald Brevis, no player could deliver a decent innings to the side. Dhoni, who came to bat at number eight, also scored only six off 10. Following the game, when the 43-year-old came for the post-match conversation with Ravi Shastri, he looked glum and expressed his disappointment.
The veteran said that the score of 154 is not justifiable and also remarked that it becomes difficult for a team to compete in the game when their multiple players fail to be effective in the same period. "I think we kept losing wickets, and in the first innings, the wicket was slightly better, and 154 wasn't a justifiable score,” said Dhoni. He also added, "In a tournament like this, if there are one or two areas to plug in the holes it's good, but when a majority of the players are not doing well you need to make changes. You can't just keep going. We are just not putting enough runs on the board."
CSK on brink on IPL 2025 elimination
With the defeat against the Orange Army, CSK have now accumulated seven losses in the competition after featuring in nine games. With five matches left in the tournament, they are required to do a miracle to qualify for the next round. With only two wins and a horrendous net run rate, they are at the bottom of the points table.
Their next encounter will be against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on April 30, in Chennai. The defeat against Shreyas Iyer and co. will formally end CSK’s chances to reach the playoffs. Before travelling to Chennai, Punjab will be locking horns with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens on April 26.
