21-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic is set to join Team Europe’s six-man squad for the upcoming Laver Cup along with other members of the Big Four in Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray. Earlier in June 2020, Murray was announced as the third member of the six-man team along with Federer and Nadal. This news will finally allow fans to witness the Big four competing together.
“It’s the only competition where you can play in a team environment with guys that you’re normally competing against and to be joining Rafa, Roger and Andy – three of my biggest all-time rivals – it’s going to be a truly unique moment in the history of our sport,” Djokovic said in a statement.
Djoker, during the Wimbledon, had talked about the lure of the Laver as it allows top players to come together and enjoy tennis. “Laver Cup is the only competition where you can have all the big rivals, the big three, big four players joining in the same team," Djokovic said.
Notably, the event is named after the Australian tennis great Rod Laver and the three-day team affair pits six of Europe's top players against six from the rest of the world. The 2022 edition of the tournament is scheduled from 23 September to 25 September at the O2 Arena in London.
The Team Europe will be led by Bjorn Borg, who has won all the previous editions. Team World will be led by American tennis star John McEnroe and has Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz and Diego Schwartzman as the other three members of his team.
Bjorn Borg talked about the opportunity of playing with the Big Four. “I don’t think I could have imagined having these four icons of the sport on one team together,” said Borg. “I know they, like I, appreciate the significance of this moment and will be truly up for it. Each year our goal is to win. With Rafa, Roger, Andy and Novak on the team, I like our chances.”
