Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, has taken a wildcard to play in the Geneva Open in the Switzerland capital from May 17 onwards, in his bid to gain from and match fitness. The 37-year-old had pulled out of the Italian Open earlier this week without giving any reason about his decision, especially when he is a six-time champion at this tournament during his illustrious career.

In his last three matches on the ATP Tour, Novak Djokovic has suffered defeats, including two first round exits in Monte Carlo and Madrid last month on clay court tournaments. The third defeat happened against Czechia teenager Jakub Mensik in the final of the Miami Open in March, missing out on winning the 100th ATP title of his career, to get within three of the mark set by Roger Federer.

Djokovic has won 12 and lost 7 matches on ATP Tour in 2025 season

Holding the number sixth ranking on the ATP ladder, Novak Djokovic last played at Geneva Open 12 months ago, reaching the semi-finals of the competition in 2024. The ongoing 2025 tennis season hasn’t been a fruitful one for the Serbian, losing seven out of 19 matches prior to the start of the second Grand Slam of the year, the French Open, at Roland Garros in Paris.

Apart from Novak Djokovic, the month of May will also see the return of world number one Jannik Sinner after serving a ban for testing positive for drugs earlier this year. He will be playing the home tournament, the Italian Open, in Rome, which is an ATP Masters 1000 event, set to kick-off its main draw on Sunday, May 11, and it will give him the best possible preparation for the French Open later this month.
