Zheng Qinwen, the Chinese tennis player, who is an Olympic champion in women’s singles, has decided to take a “short break” from tennis after undergoing an arthroscopic surgery on her right elbow. The 22-year-old took to her official Instagram account to detail the procedure she underwent before conveying her decision to take rest, kick-starting her recovery journey in a bid to return to the sport soon.

Notably, in her previous tournament, which was Wimbledon at SW19 in London, Zheng Qinwen, who was seeded fifth, lost in the first round match against Katerina Siniakova of Czechia with a scoreline of 5-7, 6-4, 1-6. The world No. 6 losing in the first round of a Grand Slam is not a regular thing, and it generally happens when the player isn’t at their best possible level.

Thank you all for your continued support and encouragement: Zheng Qinwen

In her Instagram post, Zheng Qinwen talked about dealing with “persistent pain” over the past few months in training and matches despite trying various treatments to manage the situation. She ended up consulting with elbow specialists and discussing with her team to go for arthroscopic surgery before stating that the successful apart from being grateful to have the injury behind her.

The second part of her post on Instagram read, “Now begins the recovery journey. Over the next few weeks and months, I’ll be focusing entirely on rehab—doing everything I can to come back stronger and healthier. This is just a short break, and I see it as a necessary step toward a better version of myself on court. Thank you all for your continued support and encouragement. I can’t wait to be back—see you soon!”

Zheng Qinwen will be aiming to return to tennis as early as the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open, at Flushing Meadows in New York, which is going to start on August 24, if not the Asian leg of the WTA tour later this year.
