The journey of Sushil Kumar from the akhadas to the Olympic podiums made everyone hail him as the future of Indian wrestling. But the Sagar Dhankar murder case of 2021 involving him as an accused stunned the whole country. Earlier this year in March, after being in judicial custody for more than three and a half years, the Delhi High Court citing prolonged delays in the trial process, granted bail to Sushil on furnishing a bond of INR 50,000 along with two sureties. Sushil’s legal battle is far from over as investigation of the case is still going on.

Shushil Kumar resumes duty with Northern Railways

But in a shift from courtrooms to administrative work, Sushil Kumar resumed his duty at the start of this week with Northern Railway. According to a report by IANS, the bail has allowed him to reclaim his position in the public sector. Currently designated as a Senior Commercial Manager with Northern Railway, Kumar reported to duty in formal attire and kept a low profile amid heightened media interest. Officials confirmed his reinstatement is done in accordance with service rules.

As the investigation and trial of this case is going on, for now it appears that Sushil Kumar is trying to return to routine life after the case might have taken a certain toll on him. It is to be noted that on the night of May 4, 2021, wrestler Sagar Dhankar along with other victims were allegedly beaten up by Sushil Kumar and a few others at the Chhatrasal Stadium. The fight that broke, led to the death of Sagar due to gruesome injuries.

Sushil Kumar - a forgotten face in Indian Olympic team

Sushil Kumar, once a renowned wrestler, won his first Olympic Games medal at the Beijing edition in 2008. His Olympic bronze medal was only the second for India in wrestling and first since K.D Jadhav’s bronze medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics. In the 2012 London Olympics, he was the Olympic flag bearer for India at the opening ceremony. In that tournament he won a silver medal.
