Shamar Joseph, the West Indian right-arm fast bowler, showcased his talent to the world on this day, January 28, 2024, helping West Indies beat Australia at the Gabba by eight runs in a thrilling day-night Test match. This was the only 10th time the Kangaroos lost in Brisbane in a Test match in their cricket history. Joseph emerged as a star, taking match-winning eight wickets in the match, that too with an injured toe.
Because of the sensational performance from Shamar Joseph in the second innings at the Gabba, a seven-wicket haul, West Indies drew the two-match Test series against 1-1 against Australia. The win in Brisbane for West Indies was the first-ever Test triumph against Australia after a long wait of nearly 21 years.

With the 70s of Kavem Hodge and Joshua Da Silva, the West Indies scored 311 in the first innings, and in response, the hosts declared their 1st inning on 289 with one wicket in hand, aiming to get some quick wickets under lights. Eventually, Australian bowlers managed to restrict the Windies second innings to 193, and got the target of 216 to chase in the fourth innings of the Test match. During the West Indies second innings, Shamar Joseph’s toe was hit by Mitchell Starc’s yorker, and he was not expected to take the field , but he decided to stay a part of the match thanks to the doctor’s treatment, which allowed him to bowl a spell of a lifetime at the Gabba.
Chasing 216-run target, Australia was at 93 for 2 when Joseph came to attack and changed the momentum of the match, taking Cameron Green and Travis Head’s wickets in two balls. Further, he took the wickets of Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey within three overs, to give West Indies the upper hand in the match. Next, the 25-year-old took a semblence of revenge on Starc, coming back from injury to dismiss him for 21, and complete his fifer.
He sent captain Pat Cummins to the pavilion for just two, and then clean bowled Josh Hazlewood for 0, to secure an unlikely win for West Indies against Australia at the Gabba, to finish the series at 1-1.
