India’s shot put star Tajinderpal Singh Toor endured a disappointing day at the Paris Olympics 2024 on August 2. The two-time gold medallist at the Asian Games in shot put had a disappointing performance as he finished 15th in Group A and failed to secure his berth in the final. Overall, Pal finished 29th in the men’s shot put qualification round at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024.
Appearing in his second Summer Games, Tajinderpal, who is regarded as one of India’s most celebrated athletes, managed just one legal throw of 18.05 meters before his next two attempts resulted in fouls. The qualification criteria for the shot put final required athletes to either meet the Standard Olympic Qualification of 21.35 on finish in the top 12.
Toor’s performance at the qualifiers was disastrous as the towering shot putter found it difficult to throw behind the 18m mark. Pal couldn’t meet his personal best record of 21.77m and best performance of the season at 20.38 m. Notably, Toor secured his Paris Olympics 2024 quota through the world ranking system.
In other athletics event, Parul Chaudhary, one of India’s biggest medal hopes, missed her national time by one-third second. However, she finished on 24th position and she as well as Ankita Dhyani failed to make it to the final round of the women’s 5000m race. Chaudhary, who holds the national record of 15m10.35 s clocked a timing of 15m 0.68s and finished 14th in heat number one. On the other hand, Ankita finished at 20th and last position in heat one and 40th overall.
