In a one-off double-header Tuesday in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by a convincing margin of 18 runs at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh. Coming into this match after being handed their first defeat of the season, the Shreyas Iyer-led side bounced back in style to claim their third win of the season.
For the unversed, Shreyas Iyer, the captain of PBKS won the toss and decided to bat first. His decision was the first of a kind in the 18 night games played so far in the season. With Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh once again coming out to open for the hosts, the latter departed on a duck. Skipper Shreyas Iyer joined Arya in the middle, but could not help much as he was dismissed after scoring nine off seven deliveries.
Marcus Stoinis also could not make much of an impact, following the wickets of Nehal Wadhera, Glenn Maxwell. However, Priyansh Arya starred with his 103 off 42 balls, becoming the first uncapped player to hit a century in the cash-rich league, Shashank Singh also provided some assistance with his fighting 36-ball 52*, along with Marco Jansen’s unbeaten 34. With these three knocks, PBKS posted a decent total of 219 runs in their stipulated 20 overs.
CSK lose fourth consecutive game in IPL 2025
In pursuit of the 220-run target, Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway once again opened the innings. With a brisk start, CSK lost Rachin Ravindra (36) early. Gaikwad also could not assist Conway in the middle as he was dismissed at one off three deliveries. Shivam Dube, who came in as an Impact Player, played a 27-ball 42, but that wasn’t enough.
Seeing Conway struggle to get some runs from his bat, the Kiwi opener eventually retired out after scoring 69 off 49. With over 40 runs needed in the final 12 deliveries and MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja carrying forward the innings, it looked impossible for the Yellow Army to chase the total. Despite a few boundaries, CSK eventually fell short by 18 runs, registering their fourth consecutive defeat in the ongoing edition.
With a win, PBKS have climbed up to take the fourth spot in the points table, whereas CSK continue to reel in the bottom half of the table with four defeats from five games in IPL 2025 so far.
