Hobart Hurricanes became the first team to qualify for the final of the 2024-25 Big Bash League after they defeated Sydney Sixers by 12 runs in the first qualifier at Ninja Stadium in Bellerive. Batting first, the Hurricanes posted 173/7 in their 20 overs with Caleb Jewell, Mitchell Owen and Ben McDermott playing crucial knocks. In reply, Riley Meredith and Cameron Gannon took charge with the ball as Sixers could only score 161 losing five wickets. Jordan Silk also scored a fighting fifty but couldn't take his team down the line. 

Coming to bat after losing the toss, Hobart Hurricanes got a flying start as Mitchell Owen and Caleb Jewell added 47 runs for the first wicket in 4.1 overs. Owen got out after a quickfire 36(15) runs with three fours and as many sixes, while Jewell scored a steady 40(41) runs with two boundaries. After that, Ben McDermott took charge in the middle overs top scored with 42(31) runs hitting four fours and a six. Tim David also scored a quickfire 25(10) runs as Hurricane went past 170 runs in their 20 overs, For Sixers, Ben Dwarshuis and Jafer Chohan took two scalps each while Jack Edwards and Mitchell Perry scalped a wicket each.

Jordan Silk’s fighting fifty goes vain as Hobart Hurricanes qualify for BBL 2024-25 Final

Chasing the winning target, Sydney Sixers had a disastrous start as they lost three wickets for just five runs in 2.2 overs. Fast bowling duo of Riley Meredith and Cameron Gannon were all over Sixers’ top order. After that, Kurtis Patterson and Jordan Silk did a little recovery and added 75 runs for the fourth wicket as the Sixers were back in the game. Patterson got out after scoring 48(33) runs while Silk top scored with 57(44) hitting five boundaries.

However, Jordan Silk couldn’t take his team down the line and got out when Sydney Sixers needed 30 runs in the last 11 balls. After that, Lachlan Shaw (33 off 25) and Ben Dwarshuis (16 off 8) tired till the end but Sixers fell short of 12 runs from Hobart Hurricanes’ total. Now Hurricanes will fight for the title at the same ground on January 27. On the other hand, the Sixers will get another chance as they will face winner of Knockout in the second qualifier on January 24.
