Surrey County Cricket Club on Monday, June 30 etched history as they declared after scoring 820/9. With this mammoth score on the board, the County club not only registered their highest team total in club’s history, surpassing their previous of 811 (1899), but also scored the fourth highest team total in a single innings in County Championship.

While their previous best came 126 years ago in 1899 against Somerset, they recorded their highest team total on Monday at the same ground, the Kennington Oval in London, but this time against Durham. With this feat, they also became the first county side to score 800 or more runs in an innings twice in the tournament history.

Dom Sibley smashes career-best 305 in Surrey’s record total

As Surrey resumed from 407/3 on Day 2, Sibley, who left the day at 169*, went on to add 136 runs to reach 305 off 475 deliveries. During his stay in the middle, Sibley smashed 29 fours and two sixes at a strike rate of 64.21. Moreover, the 305 from Sibley was the eighth first-class individual score of 300 or more by a Surrey batter and seventh highest.

With his knock, he joined the likes of Bobby Abel, Kevin Pietersen, Walter Read, Sir Jack Hobbs, Tom Hayward, among others in the list of players to score triple hundred for England. Apart from Sibley, Sam Curran scored 108 off 124, whereas Dan Lawrence and Will Jacks smashed 178 and 119 respectively.

Furthermore, the 820/9 from Surrey was also the highest first-class total made against Durham. Up until now, Warwickshire’s 810/4d was the highest against the Durham side, which was made at Edgbaston in 1994.

At stumps on Day 2, Durham had scored 50 at the loss of one wicket from 28 overs. After Emilio Gay was dismissed at the score of seven, Alex Lees and Will Rhodes will have a tough task to reach the total as Durham trail by 761 runs.
